Your Las Vegas Vacation

A Las Vegas vacation brings many different images to mind, from the hard-partying city of gamblers and cheap drinks to the place for a wholesome family getaway with the kids. The vacation industry of Sin City grew into its own after great efforts to reinvent itself as a playground for adults in the late 60s and early 70s.

In those days, the city of Las Vegas was packed with a busy nightlife that included 24-hour bars, prominent stage performances and, of course, its infamous and ritzy casinos. In those days, visitors could start the night off with tickets to a great performance before spending the rest of the night gambling. In the wee hours of the morning, they might grab breakfast and a martini before finally hitting the sack for just a couple hours of shut-eye before starting all over.

The idea of a vacation to Las Vegas started to take on a different meaning in the early 90s. The city’s casinos started marketing themselves to entire family clans as a way of competing with new and exciting gimmicks like the roller coaster at New York New York and the kid-friendly atmosphere at MGM Grand.

The casino management caught on to the possibility of attracting families, who had vacation money to spend, while continuing to serve their high rollers and devoted gambling clientele. That caused the rise of family-oriented entertainment, including restaurants, shows and other places focused on kids. Even many casinos started offering childcare services to parents, in order to allow them to continue gambling and drinking while their kids played.

These days, Las Vegas vacations can be anything from a kid’s fantasy-land to the adult playground of yore. Gamblers need only look up from their slot machines or roulette wheels to see a roller coaster whiz over their heads. Sponge Bob Square Pants commercials share space with ads for topless shows and escort services, now that prostitution is legal in Vegas.

It can still feel like an adult’s playground, even as the strip continues to market itself as a family-oriented destination. There continue to be a higher concentration of fine dining establishments and hot night spots than pretty much anywhere else in America, and Vegas is still overflowing with money and champagne.
