Some Tips To Keep Your Costs Down When Going On A Cruise

Are you trying to go on a cruise but not spend a fortune? If you have already found a great deal on the cruise itself you don’t want to undo your careful financial planning by overspending on cruise preparation. Here are some tips to help keep you on a reasonable pre-cruise budget.

Go with what you’ve got.

Your summer clothes from last season are fine for your cheap cruise. You’re going to relax, not to participate in an on-deck fashion show. Don’t go blow all your money before the trip on new swimwear and shorts. Your old Hawaii shirts and last summer’s swim trunks will serve you just fine.

The same goes for your luggage. Nobody is going to be impressed if you come on board with brand new leather travel bags. You’re going to be on a ship so stuffing everything into an old gym bag is perfect. In fact, it will make you look like a real “old-salt” to others on board.

Hide your plastic and bring cash.

You don’t want to leave all of your plastic at home, because sometimes emergencies do happen. But finding a really cool souvenir is not an emergency. If you budget ahead of time, and stick to both cash and travelers’ checks for spending, you won’t be tempted to add just a little something’ on the credit card. These little expenditures don’t seem like much but really add up.

Bring all of the film you are going to need.

You’ll want to take tons of photos to share with your friends and family. Cruise ships know this of course. If you end up having to purchase film on board, you are going to pay a premium. Instead, plan ahead and bring a bunch of inexpensive film with you that you purchase at a discount store.

Use the tips I’ve provided above to help you maintain the savings that you have gotten by booking an inexpensive cruise. There’s no point in booking a cheap cruise and then blowing a fortune on preparation items. Be frugal, but have fun!
