Working a full time job means that vacation days are limited. With some of us having only 10 days per year away from the office, it probably seems impossible to have a relaxed vacation for a good couple days. Instead of planning one long trip, why not have multiple short trips?
Today, I’m planning on a trip to San Diego, CA where it is only a 2 hour drive away from where I live. It might not be as exciting as Japan where I had my honeymoon, but I can pretty much go every weekend. This way, I’m not always longing for the next vacation because I will feel like I’m always having one!
With short trips, I have many choices of travel because I can either drive down with my car or take the train! Of course, both offer their own benefits so I will have to weight the pros and cons.
Another flexibility I have concerns the days I’m staying there. With it being so close, I can choose to come back the same day if I really wanted, saving money on hotel accommodations. If I do that though, I will just have to make sure that I wake up early and drive down so I get enough time down there.
Not all short trips are doable over a 2 day weekend so you can’t go every week. However, if you go on 3 day trips over the weekend, you only need to take 1 vacation day! Imagine going to ten 3-day vacations in a year. Isn’t that better than just taking one 14-day (10 business days + 4 weekend days) vacation every 12 months?
I encourage you to try it. Short trips aren’t as bad as you think!
