There are a lot of great sandwiches to be had in New York City. A lot of people love the traditional New York style delis, like Katz’s and Carnegie Deli. While they have great sandwiches, I find the amount of meat on them impractical and not something I actually want to eat often.
These are my favorite sandwich places at the moment.
The Torta – A Mexican style sandwich usually consisting of a meat (chicken or beef) stuffed with lettuce, avocado, cheese, black beans and mayo. One of the best ones in the city can be had at Puebla in the East Village for $6.
New York City has recently been on a banh mi craze. These incredibly popular Vietnamese sandwiches traditionally consist of pork, pickled carrots, cilantro and mayo on a French baguette. One of the best places to get one is at Saigon Banh Mi Bakery in Chinatown.
Of course, it is always hard to beat a cheesesteak. In my opinion the best cheesesteak to be had in the city right now is at Carl’s Cheesesteaks on 34th st and 3rd Ave. Carl’s also has a location at the new Yankee Stadium.
A great sandwich shop in the East Village is Sunny and Annie’s Deli on Avenue B and 6th Street. From the outside, it may appear as a normal bodega, but the sandwich list is expensive. One of the most popular items on the menu is the “Pho Real,” a roast beef/Vietnamese sandwich concoction.
For a great healthy sandwich, try Bite on Lafayette Street. The spicy middle eastern turkey sandwich consists of smoked turkey, greens, tomatoes, hummus and spicy sauce. Get it on whole wheat bread for an extra health fix.
Then there is Alidoro. This Italian sandwich shop is all about the ingredients and minimalistic at that. The standouts here include the Matthew, which consists of prosciutto, fresh mozzerella, arugula and dressing. The sandwiches are too big to have in one sitting. so although the $13 may seem like a lot, it can easily be two meals.
