In todays media world, there is an overwhelming growth of social media marketing website where people go buy the most bare necessities as well as to list items they may have stored in their garage that are no longer in use. The problem that this has created is that the amount of websites out there offering the same services is diluting the amount of relevant sites. For example instead of having 1000 people looking into 10 websites (100 people per site) we now have 1000 people visiting 100 websites (10 visitors per website). Having said this, it is to understand that this is all a marketing game.
A one man team having its headquarters in a garage is able to create a website, launch it and compete with the big guys we all know. In many cases, these sites will disappear in a matter of 6 months, as sixty percent of all internet startups are failures. Lack of advertising funds, poor client services and lack of a user friendly interphase will make these sites obsolete. What is the problem with this? That these sites create trash in the search Engines Indexes. This sites will still be ranked for certain keywords, and dilute the relevancy of real sites that are really dedicated to providing good resources to their customers. A good example of this can be seen in sites that are hosted outside of the USA. One specific Search Engine that I realized some experiments on is Google Mexico.
Of course if you are looking for something in particular, in this case I typed in the Search Engines for the keyword Mercado that in English means market. You will see that 4 out of the top 10 sites for those keywords are poor. Search Engines do their best at indexing and getting rid of sites that are poor, but still there will always be an influx of poor sites in the results. This influx of trash seems to be more obvious in Search Engines from specific countries. Could it be that algorithms are different for each country? Who knows?
One thing for sure that would help is if the search engines were better at seeing if incomplete sites or sites that are not relevant would just disappear from the index, instead of keeping them indexed. This would for sure take down the amount of sites competing for the same keywords and the results would be more relevant and therefore better results.
On another note, it is also important to see that some sites out there have very little content, and have their search engine ranking just because of the amount of purchased links out there. This is something that the search engines are good at getting rid of, but as far as I can see, if your site has at least one or two links pointing to it, there is a good chance that the site will stick in the index forever even if no changes are made to that site.
