Health Tips For Family Fun In The Sun

The kids are home from school and the weather is sweltering out there. Whether you’re taking the family on a faraway trip or just hitting a beach nearby, keep these tips in mind to ensure that your loved ones are safe and healthy this summer.

Once you decide where you want to take the family on vacation, make sure to bring the right kind of gear. For the beach or other outdoorsy location, be sure to bring enough sunscreen for everybody, and suggest that they all bring baseball caps or visors to protect their eyes. Looser, light clothing is a good idea, as well. Many folks live in flip-flops during the hot months, but sneakers are definitely a better option if you’ll be walking long distances.

Many people carry soda or sports drinks with them during their travels, but gallon for gallon, water is the best bet for rehydrating your body on a hot summer’s day. Placing it in the freezer for awhile before you go out will keep the water cold longer, and will help you stay cool as well.

If you’re traveling in a group, be sure that you always stay together. Make sure everyone is present and accounted for as you see the sights and explore new areas. Keep valuables tucked away, and don’t wear jewelry or watches that aren’t necessary.

Make sure you know where you’re going, particularly in another state or country. Use a map to find your way to tourist sites in the area, and if you aren’t sure where you’re going, make it a point to ask for directions. It’s never a good idea to wander around in an unfamiliar area, so always use common sense.

Learn the local customs if you are traveling to a foreign country. There are locales where things we take for granted are considered inappropriate. In China, for example, it is considered rude to whistle or wink, and eye contact tends to be indirect.

Wherever your summer travels may take you, consider what you need to keep in mind before you get going on your vacation. Getting prepared can make your getaway much easier, and much safer for everyone involved.
