The media generally reports on the political angle of defense contracting, the few times it’s ever talked about. Otherwise, in the culture at large, what do people actually know about what it’s like working for the LogCap4 project, doing overseas jobs in Afghanistan (and elsewhere)?

See these 4 myths below — they’re the biggest ones when talking about LogCap4 or working in Afghanistan.

#1: Only the Army Guys Have it Tough.

Not to take away even one single thing from what every single military person is putting on the line when they head over in service, but the idea that contractors, working on LogCap4 jobs and drawing a nice salary from it, are somehow in cushy positions is more than a little crazy. Any defense job is tough, no matter what you’re doing.

#2: When You’re Working Defense Jobs, It’s Just Like Being in the Army.

The sense of camaraderie just doesn’t exist over there. You find it among the soldiers because they’ve been trained to use it, and because it’s fundamental when you’re fighting an enemy and have to work together as a team. But when you are a contractor, there to earn? Good luck!

#3: Money, Money, Everywhere

Some news reports have talked about big-time misappropriation of funds (mostly in Iraq), that contractors were pulling in gigantic contracts and mis-spending the cash. If this is still going on, it’s certainly not on making the experience more pleasant for the workers, that is for damn sure.

#4: You Will Hate 100% of the People You Work With.

Don’t worry, that’s the idea I’m trying to give you here. Of course there are good people working on LogCap4, but you can’t go over to do army jobs expecting to find them right away. You’ve got to wade through a big mess of problems before things work themselves out (to a degree).
