Planning is key to enjoying a great vacation when visiting Mexico. Taking the time to plan your trip ahead of time is the best way to enjoy your vacation. Driving around Cancun, Mexico in a rental car is a great way to see even more of the sights and sounds of this tropical Caribbean paradise. A rental car represents a very economical way to see a lot more of the island than you would if you were going to rely solely on walking. Without a vehicle, you’re likely going to be limited to whatever is within walking distance of your resort; there is so much more culture and history that can be experienced during Cancun vacations that it would be almost criminal to limit yourself to your hotel and the nearest beach and bars.
Traveling can provide enjoyment, relaxation, adventure and exhilaration – often within the same trip, depending on where you’ve chosen to go. A big part of the mystery and adventure, is in fact, the hesitation tinged with excitement that one often feels when they are about to embark on a trip to someplace they’ve never been. The mind will be racing with questions: what will it be like? What will the local culture be like? Will my plan to go to location “x” be everything I’ve built it up to be? Will I have as an enjoyable trip as my friend did when he went? This uncertainty can prove to be a source of anxiety for some; as you travel more often and become more seasoned and experienced, these types of questions will cease and you’ll embark on your latest trip or adventure without too much thought.
Despite all of the roadblocks, both economic and geographic, the Cancun development was officially approved in 1969. Development began in earnest in January of 1970 when the first technicians and workers arrived. The first steps were to open a highway between the island and Puerto Juarez, construct an airstrip and the creation of a master plan for the entire development. The “master plan” consisted of three smaller initiatives: construct a tourism zone with resorts, hotels, shopping and marinas; construct a residential area for permanent residents with all of the amenities of a city (*roads, schools, hospitals, markets, etc.); construction of an airport to accommodate international travelers.
For all those Rush fans out there, yes we are speaking of Neil Peart the drummer and lyricist for Canadian epic rock band Rush. Like most other celebrated writers, Peart is a multi-talented man who has found success in more than one area of life. He has won dozens of awards for his musical talents, been inducted into the Canadian Songwriter Hall of Fame, and (along with his bandmates) was the first rock drummer to be made an Officer of the Order of Canada. But we are here to look at Peart’s travel writing, and that begins with a tragedy.
Forty years ago, Cancun existed as nothing more than a somewhat typical deserted island. Its existence was mostly unknown as it was located in what was then considered a mostly forgotten region of the Caribbean. It essentially consisted of a series of uneven sand dunes (*some were less than 100ft wide) which were separated from the mainland by two long canals that ran out in to a massive lagoon.
In retrospect, there are four different eras in Cancun’s creation, development and establishment. Each era is personified by its own timeline of economic crisis and growth. They span from 1969 to 1975, 1976 to 1983, 1984 to 1989 and finally from 1999 to 2005. Problems and issues were plentiful during these phases, many of which were seen to be insurmountable setbacks that could permanently harm the tourist driven economy.
There is not hard and fast definition of risk available. Everyone with an interest in philosophy, ethics and legal mumbo-jumbo has a different idea of the meaning. So we are going to discuss risk in the context of insurance, and more specifically, travel insurance. First of all, risk may be a state of uncertainty but it is in terms of negativity or loss. In this way, insurance can be deemed a risk-reducing investment and gambling a risk-increasing investment.
