Put simply, a cenote is an above-ground entrance to a subterranean network of caves that have (usually) filled with water. The Mexican peninsula of Yucatan contains many cenotes; apart from being beautiful, they are historically significant, having been noticed, used, and appreciated since the first appearance of human civilization in Mesoamerica.

Classifying Cenotes

Since 1936, cenotes have been classified into several distinct types based on their physical appearance. Pit (or jug) cenotes are perhaps the most typical, simply described as openings in the ground which connect the surface with a subterranean region larger than their circumference. Cylinder cenotes are similar in shape, but have longer passages to the underground with steep, vertical walls. Basin cenotes, as their name suggests, contain a shallow basin of water at their terminus. Cave cenotes are the most unlike the other kinds, with horizontal, rather than vertical, entrances, which usually remain dry.

Cenote Creation

Cenotes are formed by natural processes of weathering and the dissolution of rock in water. With the help of abrasive forces like rain, wind, and gravity, the surface region above an underground void gradually wears away, until an opening appears. Sometimes, the stability of the entire roof structure is affected by the cenote beginning to form, and it collapses, leaving a wide circular entrance to the caves beneath.

Cenotes usually form more rapidly when the depressions they begin as are not completely filled with water, as the motion of a smaller portion of liquid is more rapidly aided by surface forces, resulting in a more rapid degradation of the rock beneath. Saltwater, being more abrasive, generally forms cenotes more quickly than fresh water does.

Cenotes whose roofs do not completely collapse usually leave a ledge or platform of rock, obligating any who wish to enter to crawl or slouch in order to gain entrance to the water source beneath.

Underground Passages

The Yucatan is also the location of a huge, partially submerged crater, called the Chicxulub crater, which was created by an asteroid strike about 65 million years ago, and is suspected to be one of the major events that resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs. A ring of cenotes is arranged on the circular rim of the section of crater which lies on land.

The Chicxulub cenotes can reaches extreme depths of over 300 feet below the water table, where large amounts of fresh water from rain and runoff has accumulated. The water is remarkably clear and pure, and the conjoined nature of these cenotes has created a kind of underground river, which has been used since the days of the great Maya cities as a source of fresh water and transportation.

Though there are few rivers or lakes that run anywhere through the Yucatan peninsula, the currents that run through the water in these subterranean caves are often quite fast, and usually faster below cenotes with collapsed roofs than those who still retain a portion of their strata. Because they provide a natural source of fresh water in an environment where it’s otherwise in short supply, the Yucatan cenotes were instrumental in helping the first urban centers develop. They were just as crucial to the first irrigation works built by the Maya, who ruled the region beginning over 2000 years ago.

As is plain to see, then, the cenotes of the Yucatan have played a pivotal role in both human history and the flowering of the tropical jungles in that region, from the time of the earliest human settlements right up until the present day, when they are still used for drinking water, and more commonly, as recreational locations for adventure tourists and cave divers.

For many tourists their holidays appear unfinished if they can’t go out each night and enjoy what they consider a genuine holiday with their couple, family or friends. Fortunately for these tourists Puerto Vallarta is basically a place where you can go out every night and go to a wide variety of places where your personal taste can be fulfilled.

The regular kick off point is the famous Malecon, mainly because it is here that some of the best bars and nightclubs are to be found. The newly redecorated beach promenade, known locally as “el malecon”, is found beside the beach and is the center of the fun of Puerto Vallarta nightlife.

Indubitably, one of the most frequently visited clubs in the evening is Christine discotheque by Hotel Krystal, this disco isn't on the malecon.

There’s also the Zoo Nightclub, this club offers house music, including reggae, pop and much much more for those who enjoy all sorts of music, it is found right on the malecon.

You could also consider La Vaquita, a place offering tasty micheladas, a popular drink that’s prepared by mixing lager with a spread of other ingredients including lime, tamarind, chile, strawberry, mango, etc, you have to have one.

If you're into rock, there are also options for you, eg. Bebotero, this bar offers live rock music covers to sing along to and enjoy the whole rocking night. Maybe you’re looking for something with a rather more Mexican style, El Mariachi Loco is the right place, with onstage music, mariachi, boleros and romantic music. It is no doubt the perfect place to experience the flavour of real Mexico.

Maybe you like listening to some jazz at Le Bistro on the Cuale Island which also, sometimes, offers live jazz.

One more possibility is to take a night tour, relaxing while you sail in the waters of the Banderas Bay enjoying cocktails, a delicious dinner and the lovely views that Puerto Vallarta’s natural beauties have to offer you.

Read more on the different nightlife options and on Puerto Vallarta. Pablo Gonzalez has lived in many of Mexico’s tourist locations and likes to share his experiences and tips including ideas for Puerto Vallarta hotels and tours.

There are snack bars as well as many different international cuisine restaurants along with as buffets and themed nights for example barbecues, French and Italian nights for guests to try. You’ll find no inflexible rules concerning meal times for visitors.

Even though you should need very little when it comes to money, because your vacation is all inclusive, the hotel complexes will have banking facilities. Postcards can easily be bought and mailed on site and prepaid phone cards and stamps are available buy.

If throughout their beach front vacation in Mexico the visitors choose to venture outside the complex and do some exploring, travel reps and hotel staff can easily make arrangements for private transportation or guide trips and excursions. Tour guides are available for hire and will provide a service for small family groups or for the bigger tour groups.

The beautiful and elusive quetzal is one of Central America’s most striking and remarkable animal denizens. Native to the jungle highlands of Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Belize, today the quetzal is not the most widely-known tropical bird; however, it has a long history of admiration and even reverence from native peoples stretching back to the Aztec and Maya empires of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The encroaching presence of man and the constant danger of hungry predators has made it a rare animal, difficult for the average tourist to glimpse, but well worth the effort to any fan of exotic birds or natural beauty.

Origin of the Name

Six species of quetzal are known to science, the largest and most well-known being the resplendent quetzal. Growing to over 30 centimeters, its name comes from the Nahuatl word for “to stand up;” perhaps this was the ancient Aztecs’ method of noting the long and sometimes upraised tail feathers that are one of the bird’s most distinctive features. The quetzal is not listed as an endangered species, but its natural environment is under constant siege by encroaching human development, and many conservationists are doubly worried that the quetzal’s low reproductive rate could spell ecological disaster for the species in the not-too-distant future.

Bird Apotheosis

Because of its beautiful plumage and unusual appearance, the quetzal was highly regarded by Pre-Columbian Mesoamericans. The Maya and Aztec both worshiped gods which adopted the bird’s name :for the Maya, Kukulkan, and for the Aztec, Quetzalcoatl. In both cases, this was a feathered serpent god, responsible for lofty ideals and accomplishments such as learning, the introduction of corn, rebirth, and the creation of mankind.

Treetop Treasury

Today, the quetzal is not only the national bird of Guatemala, but also lends its name to the country’s currency. The Guatemalan quetzal is divided into 100 centavos (colloquially, “lenes”), and was first introduced in 1925 by President Jose Maria Orellana as a replacement for the peso. Existing in both coin and bill forms, the currency does not carry the image of the bird itself, instead featuring various scenes and august personages from Central American history.

Finding Rare Treasure

Searching out the quetzal in the wild is an exercise in patience; the key to the quetzal’s survival has always been an ability to blend in to its surroundings. Despite the bird’s iridescent green plumage and bright red belly, it is quite adept at disappearing into the jungle foliage, and expeditions to glimpse this rare and beautiful bird are best attempted with the help of an expert guide. The quetzal’s natural habitat excludes the hot lowlands of the northern Yucatan peninsula; while planning a trip to the region, consider contacting a local bird-watching society, who can advise the best locations and seasons for searching out the quetzal in its jungle home. If your aim is merely to hear the quetzal’s song, you can do so at many popular Maya ruin sites like Kukulkan pyramid or the plaza at Tikal. Just clap your hands, and the call of the quetzal will greet your ears, echoing across the aged stone relics just as it must have long ago, when those cities were full of life and toil under the tropical Mexican sun.

If you find yourself hankering for a bacon & eggs breakfast at some point during your trip, there are many buffets that will oblige, as well as dozens of vendors selling hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, and traditional carnival fare. So whether you’re in search of authentic Mexican or feeling a bit homesick, the restaurants and dining establishments on the Rivera Maya will accommodate you.

A Little Adventure

For those with a bit more of an active bent, the Riviera Maya can fulfill your desire to get out and stretch your legs a bit. Several eco-parks, such as Xplore, offer a range of unusual and exhilarating activities, all available to anyone who pays the price of admission. A 3-mile jungle ride will take through rainforest, across rivers, and even down into isolated caves. Also provided are unlimited rides on the zip-line system which has been installed throughout the park. These lines hang at varying heights, from ‘hammock’ height for the beginners, to over ten stories for the experienced or simply brave. 11 lines of varying configurations and the ability to ride to your heart’s content should satisfy anyone’s craving for a little adventure while on vacation!

The underground swim is another popular activity that will quench your adventurous spirit. A flexible time length of up to 40 minutes, as well as the option of a boat for those would prefer to spend the time relaxing and taking in the grand scenery of the caves, is a great way to escape from the world – even for a whole day – before heading back to hit the 24-hour, well-stocked buffet restaurants to stock up on calories for the next day’s activities.

Mayan Heritage

The resort-centered and jungle adventure activities aren’t your only choices for filling up your vacation in Riviera Maya with fun – and even a little education. Not far from the resort beaches are some of the world’s most remarkable archaeological sites. At the port of Tulum, an ancient Maya walled city peers out over the crystal-clear water. Tulum fell before the invading Spanish during the 1500s, bringing an end to centuries of prosperity, but the citizens were decimated by disease rather than outright conflict, so the city remains amazingly well-preserved even today; it’s one of the most thoroughly intact sites of any Pre-Columbian culture in Central America. The towering walls, huge pyramids, temples, and the nearby biological preserve will delight anyone with a bent towards local history or ecological conservation. What better way to put an educational spin on a relaxing vacation than to spend the day swimming with dolphins and climbing 2000 year old pyramids?

The Mexican Constitution forbids the direct titling of Mexico real estate to folk from other states regarding properties within the constrained sector. The restricted zone is 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) from the border and 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) from the shoreline. But as a way to ensure overseas investment to come into these locations, the Mexican authorities have invented FIDEICOMISO, which closely mean, a real estate trust.

Mexican laws determine specific limitations on property title by foreign purchasers in Mexico property. In 1971, the Mexican Bank Trust was founded to deal with the purchases from foreigner-visitors along well-liked coastlines by Mexican President Echeverria. Inspired by the approval of the Northern US Treaty Agreement, the Mexican Government recognised that it was vital to attraction foreign investments in Mexico. A decision was taken that it must be less dangerous and easier so as to trap investors from other countries specifically from America and Canada.

Under the said law, the Mexican govt has given its assurances to overseas financiers that their investments in Mexico are protected. The law permits you can establish a permitted company in Mexico and then use it to obtain the Mexico property. Considering that the property is owned by a Mexican organization, this satisfies the constitutional necessities.

If this company is a trust, a foreigner could be named as being the beneficiary. The trust is run by a Mexican monetary institution that is required to work for the benefit of the beneficiary of the trust. The Mexican General Law of Commercial Companies (“GLCC”) categorizes a few kinds of company affiliations. The GCCL controls not just the preliminaries with regards to incorporation; but additionally, places directions on their business governance.

This piece of legislation has been in application now for several years so as to continue to draw foreigners and bring in the precious dollars. As of 2010, tourism ranks as the second biggest dollar earner for Mexico. Come and avail this law for your safe investment in Mexico real estate now!

With its wonderful culture, Mexico is now changing into a favorite option to see and a good choice for many citizens of the Earth who are eyeing for a second home. This country has great weather with exotic and gorgeous landscapes that have captured the imaginations of many visitors who've seen Mexico. There is wide latitude of choices where you can settle in this lovely place. More than this, its proximity to the US makes it more interesting for the USA citizens and Canadians that are looking to take a position in real estate in Mexico.

A different reason why this place is so popular to numerous expatriates is the price of real estate in Mexico. It is more reasonable than in other places such as Europe or Far East. Just like prices in other bits of the world that are lifting to unprecedented heights, the same is also happening in Mexico, but inside affordable levels.

The increase in the price of real estate in Mexico is tied to various factors similar with other places in the world. It is dictated by the location, safety and peace, traffic considerations and accessibility to the area. Even taxes and fees related to taking real estate are also a factor that makes Mexico a sensible choice in most examples.

If you're a foreigner attempting to find a place in Mexico to settle, the above listed factors are worth judging. It must also be noted that the more tourists visit the place, the more costly it becomes. The acceptance to foreign visitors to the area is a consideration in the marketability and pricing of the community.

Buying a property in Mexico has some issues. Under the Mexican Foreign Investment Laws, foreigners aren't permitted to personally own real estate in Mexico in specific areas called the limited zone. Nonetheless there are legal approaches that a foreigner should use to obtain ownership. The commonest is through a Mexican Real Estate Trust. There is also another way to indirectly get properties in Mexico and that's by building a Mexican co..
