Travelling to Hong Kong is always exciting. You can use the superb shopping, not to mention the sounds and sights of a world-class town with a novel mix of the ultra-modern and the traditional. Nevertheless it is always smart to understand how far your cash will go, especially in a world-wide recession.

The better news is that if you would like to order hong kong dollars, the GBP is worth equally as much today in Hong Kong as it was one year ago. The exchange rate for September 12, 2011, for the GBP was 12.33 HKD, only barely higher than the rate of 12.10 HKD measured in September, 2010. The difference of 0.23 HKD amounts to only 2 p. Your cash would buy the same food, lodging and comforts as it would one year back in Hong Kong, notwithstanding the rates of inflation.

Nevertheless if you're looking to take advantage of a rise in the GBP compared to the HKD to make your cash go further in Hong Kong, there is nothing to celebrate. The fairly even economy over the past year with only slight fluctuations doesn't lend itself to giving you the benefit you're looking for.

Before the Great Recession of 2008, the GBP was worth much more in Hong Kong, with an exchange rate of one GBP to $15.29 HKD. UK travellers could get lots more for their money in Hong Kong, an increase of 20% compared to today’s exchange rate. A chilled afternoon at Stanley Market, a ride up the escalator to Victoria Top, or a shopping trip to Kowloon could all be bought for a ton less than you would pay today, notwithstanding the rate of inflation.

Over the past 3 years, a low point was reached in Jan, 2009, with an exchange rate of one GBP to 10.59 HKD, a difference of 30%. The value of the GBP stayed low, hovering round the 11.00 HKD mark, until April, 2009, when it started a slow but steady increase. Another low point was reached in May, 2010, with a rate of one GBP to 11.19 HKD. Since that point there was a slow incline, topping at 12.92 HKD at the beginning of August, 2011.

Over the past year, the GBP has stayed reasonably steady compared with the HKD. A low point of 11.90 HKD was reached in September, 2010, with the best bit during the last year being 12.96 HKD at the beginning of May. The most notable difference between the high and the low values was 9% for has a grand total of 1.06 HKD or 8 p over the last year.

In the last month, there had been been a steady decline in the value of the GBP compared to the HKD. On August 12, 2011, the GBP was worth 12.69 HKD. The worth refused to 12.33 HKD by September 12, 2011, a difference of 3%.

Diagnosis

Since September 1, 2011, the value of the GBP has fell slightly. If the trend in the last year repeated itself, the GBP would slowly gain worth (roughly 4 pence) against the HKD up till November when it might level off. UK travellers who want to see lights of Hong Kong will probably find only a modest fluctuation in HKD exchange rates, primarily based on past trends.

It’s not hard to chalk up a massive bill in Hong Kong, you can still find an array of activities to do that will not have you deepening your budgets!

1. Experience the Adrenaline of a Horse Race

You will discover an impressive ambiance on a horse race night at the Happy Valley Race Course in Hong Kong Island (Near Causeway Bay MTR). The flood lights from the race course blind out the sky scrapers lurking in the background creating a bursting effect on the stadium.

At 10 HKD entry and another 10 HKD for an opportunity to bid on a winning horse, you will have an engaging evening in Hong Kong. You just might win some extra survival money for extended stay in Hong Kong!

2. Hike to the Top of Saan Deng (Victoria Peak)

A ride on a cable car to the top of Hong Kong Peak for magnificent views over the whole bay is one of the city’s largest draws. A round trip on the cable car is available at the cost of 33 HKD.

For the more adventurous, one can possibly hike it – AT NO COST! Though it is steep at times, the path is a breeze to follow and is well worth the exercise and breathtaking sights of the city while gaining elevation. The walk to the Peak should take under an hour. There are also plenty of other trekking opportunities in Hong Kong, hidden away around the concrete jungle itself.

3. Watch the Hong Kong Skyline Laser Spectacle

Cliche, but nevertheless there’s never been an individual who has traveled to Hong Kong as a traveler and failed to stop briefly to view the sky line. Looking over the bay at Hong Kong’s skyline at night or day is undoubtedly a sight which will make anyone skip a few breaths in amazement.

The enchanting laser show begins at 8 pm everyday.

4. Venture into the Chungking Mansions

When it comes to world culture, there are not many places in the whole world which are as interesting as the Chungking Mansions.

Think of the modern world uniting within a building – all with business on their minds. You can pretty much sense ventures and deals floating from culture to culture in the air.

The bottom floor comes complete with everything from aromatic Bangladeshi curry restaurants to passe cellular phone dealers. The upper levels are populated with budget guest houses.

Right next to the Chungking Mansions is one other complex famous for international business and cheap lodging, the Mirador Mansions.

5. Try eating Dim Sum (Yum Cha)

Eating Hong Kong’s most globally renowned treat does not usually come for free, yet it definitely would not have been the same to go to the city without at least a couple brunches worth of dim sum!

Dainty bamboo steamers packed with all sorts of dumplings, petite plates of delectable looking assortments, and edible artful creations are what make dim sum such a wholesome culinary experience.

China the thriving power city:Hong Kong, over time, has come to be abuzz with tourist activity. Millions of people over the world visit the city of Hong Kong every year both for pleasure as well as work, The issue that most expatriates face after coming to the city is that of finding decent, advantageous as well as affordable accommodation. Many don’t even know the wide number of property choices available. Since most foreigners tend to look out for Hong Kong apartments for rent, this article is dedicated to offering them information about the different kinds available.

Penthouse Apartments

This variety of apartments has become quite common in Hong Kong, over the years. Also referred to as duplex apartments, penthouses usually occupy two floors in a building. Duplex apartments in the city usually have a study, bedroom, guestroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. Depending upon your accommodation requirements as well as budget, such apartments can have anything between one and three bedrooms, on an average. If a foreigner is ready to shell out more, a terrace is also provided with the rest of the living area.

Old Blocks of Apartments

Apartments of this variety are largely on the decline in Hong Kong now. Such blocks represent older remnants of the city and usually huge in area. Apart from independent rooms, they usually come with detached bathrooms and guest quarters. A distinct feature in these old apartments is the large balcony. Since they have been around for a while, they come for a lesser rate. Such apartment blocks are quite common in the Western District area of Hong Kong.

New Blocks of Apartments

This variety of apartments symbolizes the commercial development that Hong Kong has undergone over the last few decades. Usually larger than the old blocks, new block apartments flaunt modern spaces and appeal to the affluent sense of living. Though they are styled much like hotel rooms, these apartments afford a greater space as far as living area is concerned. A range of these new apartment blocks are to be found in areas like Victoria Peak in Hong Kong.

Serviced Apartments

Be it Hong Kong apartments for rent or Tokyo apartments for rent, the solution you are looking for could well be serviced apartments. Having developed mainly to cater to the tourist population in the city, these apartments come with a number of added advantages like air conditioning, television, refrigerator and sometimes even a personal kitchen. The best part about these apartments is that they do not entangle the occupant in unnecessary legal hassles and payment structures.

Asia is the largest continent when measured by landmass and human population. Following is an overview of Asia.

Asia is considered one of the seven continents. This continental definition, however, is far broader than many people think. Under the seven continent methodology, Asia stretches from Japan in the East through Russia in the West. It encompasses Saudi Arabia and everything above Asia. While it doesn’t always make practical sense, there is no denying this definition of Asia makes it the home of over 60 percent [4 billion] of all humans. China and India, of course, are the locations of a vast majority of these people.

In modern times, geographers recognize there really is no dividing line between Asia to the west and Europe to the East. This has resulted in the entire area being called Eurasia, but thousands of years of terminology aren’t about to pass into antiquity. Today, most people refer to Europe as a continent so far as it extends to the Ural Mountains in Russia. Everything to the east of that mountain range is considered Asia. For instance, Israel is considered a country in Western Asia!

Russia has even picked up on this theme with the two heads on the national flag. The west facing head refers to the European part of Russia while the East facing head refers to the Asian part of the country. Within Russia, it is almost as if there are two countries with Moscow and St. Petersburg having heavy European influences. Cities in the Far East, such as Vladivostok, are much more oriented to China and such.

To resolve the boundary issue, the powers that be have started defining Asia subcontinents. The areas are:

Central Asia – Kazakhstan Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

1. East Asia – China, Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan, North and South Korea.

2. North Asia – Russia.

3. India Subcontinent – India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.

4. Southeast Asia – Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar [Burma], Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

5. Southwest Asia – The Middle East including Turkey, Iran, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon and sometimes Egypt.

Given the problems defining the boundaries of Asia, you can imagine it is also difficult to define certain characteristics regarding the continent. After all, life in Turkey is much different than in China. Conversely, customs in India are completely different than those in China. In fact, most people living in Asia take offence when someone uses the word “Asians” to refer to them. The word implies a similarity among all people in Asia, which simply isn’t true.

Economically, things are a bit easier to categorize. The largest economy in Asia is China as a measure of gross domestic product. Officially known as the People’s Republic of China, this country remains communist in name only when it comes to economic issues. With massive economic growth over the last 10 years, China is the second largest economy in the world after the United States. Another heavily populated area, India, is now the fourth biggest economy in the world, while relatively small Japan is the third. Put in practical terms, Asia is home to three of the four biggest economies on Earth. The three dominant financial centers are Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore.

With so many countries, it is hardly surprising to find a wide variety of religious practices in Asia. There are a wide variety of belief systems, but Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam have the largest number of adherents.

Figuring out exactly what constitutes Asia is largely a matter of opinion. Among many assertions about Asia, the undisputable one is it is the home to the largest percentage of humans on the planet.

Hong Kong is really one of the world’s excellent towns. Regardless of whether on your 1st visit or your tenth, you may undoubtedly be amazed and astounded by the city’s pulsing lifestyle, hurried pace and frenzy of several lifestyles. Hong Kong is one of the world’s genuine global metropolises – a type of Gotham City for Asia where almost everything you want – be it American donuts or maybe Australian Shiraz – is usually obtainable.

When talking about Hong Kong to friends that have not been there, I often mention that it is like London plonked down in the middle of Asia. Or London with plenty and lots and lots of Chinese folks. While a fair adequate fact, that still does not do Hong Kong justice, with its countless of several cultures and lifestyles and cuisines.

Getting Around

There are 2 methods transport alternatives in Hong Kong: the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) and your own two feet. With these 2 tools at your disposal, you may see literally all of Hong Kong. When you first arrive, you may absolutely prefer to pick up an Octopus Card, the city’s mass transit refill card that permits you to swipe onto any of the public transport alternatives in Hong Kong, including buses and trains. This is much like the Oyster Card in London.

Getting to the town is easy, too, with plenty of cheap flights to Hong Kong from most major world cities, including Europe and North America.

What to see

What to see in Hong Kong relies upon largely on your own likes and dislikes. The 1st stop for most tourists is a journey up Victoria Peak Tram, a historic funicular railway which carries passengers on a near-vertical ascent up to Victoria Peak, the highest point in the city overlooking Hong Kong’s amazing skyline.

You may also desire to test Hong Kong’s vibrant horse racing tradition. Your best bet is to catch one of the city’s old street trolleys to Happy Valley

Racecourse, where you can certainly enjoy young horses race on grass under the dim sparkle of tall skyscrapers.

In Hong Kong’s trendy Soho section, a series of small avenues stacked upon each other bursting with adorable shops, small dining establishments and attractive structures, you may also desire to take a ride on the world’s longest escalator, Central-Mid-Levels-Escalator.

Hong Kong also offers an array of attractive galleries, or if you’re searching for something a little more religious, you may take the intensive journey up to the 10,000 Buddhas Monastery in Sha Tin, in which countless steps head you past hundreds of golden buddha statues to a hilltop monastery.

Hong Kong is also a shopper’s paradise. From the retailers in Soho to the upmarket global brand merchants and multi-level malls in Causeway Bay or the funky local markets on the Kowloon side of the city, you could basically find anything you’re after – and, sometimes at a great value!

Exactly where to stay

Most of Hong Kong’s budget lodging options are situated along Nathan Road, where a few high-raised buildings house youth hostels and guesthouses run by local families. When making your reservation for these kinds of accommodations, make sure that you receive confirmation of your bed and make sure to check out the amenities before you pay, mainly because some are fairly grotty.

Upscale alternatives range from major international hotel brands to local boutique hotels. In most cases, it’s possible to spend just about any value for a hotel room or hostel bed in Hong Kong, depending on your resources.

Just what to eat

There is only one thing much better than shopping in Hong Kong, and that is eating. From small noodle joints to upscale French restaurants, you will find all types of restaurant, eating hall and snack stall on earth in Hong Kong. The Kowloon peninsula, specifically the Mong Kok neighborhood, is really a haven for local Hong Kong restaurants and snack stalls offering all sorts of unusual and crazy bites to eat. On Hong Kong Island, especially in Soho and Central, there are numerous enhanced global dining places for discerning food enthusiasts.

When to go and what to pack

Hong Kong’s weather conditions are virtually always moderate, and can get very hot and humid in the summer. The most effective time of year to travel to Hong Kong is during the autumn, winter and spring while the temperatures are most liveable. Summer season could be extremely humid and warm in Hong Kong.

It’s best to pack light and portable clothing which breathes and is comfy for a day of jogging. When you want to travel during the winter, make sure to bring at least a light jacket or coat in case of a cold spell.

My friends and I are planning to go to a trip to Hong Kong this year and I just can’t wait to go there. I have heard from some common friends who have been there before that the country is definitely a must for shoppers especially during the last quarter of the year. That is actually the time when most of the stores in Hong Kong go on sale and they offer up to 90% discount on their merchandises in order to give way for the new items that they will be selling by the first month of the following year.

I find it really fascinating just simply by thinking of each and every thing that we could buy with our money. Imagine each and every stuff that we will get for ourselves, our friends and relatives. A number even come over to Hong Kong during the last quarter of the year to buy their stock for their particular store so they can sell it for a cost-effective price and undertaking a lot of profit out of it. I presume that would certainly also be a fantastic idea, too.

Since we will be going there just before the Christmas season, we will still have enough time to buy a lot of stuff that is most likely to become a best-seller during the holiday season. And the holiday season is the best time of the year to go shopping because that is the time of the year that most stores and establishments go on sale.

Some men and women I know even buy their wedding items during the holiday sale simply because it’s much cheaper during these times to order stuff that usually are really not in demand. It’s a considering the fact that shopping for a nice suit for one’s wedding day would certainly be more expensive once you buy it in the 1st or 2nd quarter of the year simply because which is realistically the time when a lot of males usually are shopping for their particular suits, tuxedos, ties, cufflinks and all only to make it in time for their May or June wedding.

Thus, suppliers take advantage of this need and they shoot up their particular prices up to double as versus getting your suit, tuxedo as well as other things for the wedding during the lean months when these kinds of clothes are not in demand. Chances happen to be you might get a very good deal on the clothes that you will probably be donning for one’s wedding day. Not only that, you could also buy wedding souvenirs along with other stuff that you might possibly demand in preparation for the wedding. Numerous take advantage of the excellent sale in Hong Kong to buy Christmas Gifts for almost all people and nearly all of all, businessmen, retailers and wholesalers come to Hong Kong to get the very best bargain out of the bulk orders they help to make.

Although I may not be a fan of the cheap plastic items, faux fur and faux leather items being sold in Hong Kong, it is still very exciting to know that you are able to purchase a lot of stuff with just enough money. With $50, you can probably buy all your friends a decent gift for each one that won’t really seem that cheap because I have to admit that the products coming from Mainland China is becoming better as they come up with the latest products in the market.

Causeway Bay is the most populated area in the Hong Kong Island. With a mix of both places where locals shop like Izzue and large shopping centers like Sogo and Time Square, Causeway Bay has become a extremely popular place for young people.

Although the rent here is one of the most expensive in the world, Causeway Bay still attracts a ton of merchants who all want the foot traffic that this area can provide. This is also part of the reason why there are literally buildings of restaurants, where each floor is a different restaurant as no one can afford the rent on 1st level that faces the street.

Even though many of the roads are quite wide, this is a very tough place to walk from one place to the next without bumping into someone even in weekdays. During the weeknights and the weekends, this becomes even more so as everyone pile onto the streets to shop and eat.

Getting to Causeway Bay is no problem though, as the area is accessible by just about all kinds of transportation that Hong Kong offers. If you take the MTR, just go on the blue line adn get off at the Causeway Bay stop.

If you do stop by, I recommend stopping at popular meeting places like the front of Sogo and the big area in front of Times Square.

Causeway Bay is a great place to be when you are in Hong Kong. In fact, I stay in Causeway Bay when I come to Hong Kong!
