Airport News Affecting The Local Economy

Where airlines are concerned the media usually glosses over recent events, unless a crash is involved. Airport news is not something that makes people sit up and listen. However, it can have a serious and lasting ripple effect on the surrounding economy.

Hotels stand to make a lot of money in the event of flight delays and cancellations. Rooms that would otherwise sit empty, or be booked at far less money, suddenly come into great demand. Even their normal business comes largely from travelers. People think often of the two industries being closely related.

There is a good reason why on discount travel websites airfare and hotel accommodations are often bundled together to create a more attractive price. Both depend upon vacation and holiday seasons for their survival. While business travel is given a lot of weight, it is also given larger discounts and so overall does not produce the same sort of return.

The link from the flight to the rental car is not always as commonly thought of as the hotel relationship, however it is just as strong. Rental agencies maintain counters and lots at airports. They advertise mid-flight, and in the gates. They place themselves in such a way as to share in the profits of the skies as much as possible. This works to their advantage more often in smaller towns, since larger cities usually have excellent public transit systems in place.

Shipping by rail is in fact more convenient and cost-effective than by air. In addition trains are able to run in the elements longer than planes. It takes much more to stop a train than it does to ground a plane. In extreme weather cause people to opt for this second choice. Traveling by train is not as popular as air, mostly because of time limits set on vacations by companies.

The first impression visitors have of a place is what they see when they arrive. This is why cities have such a vested interest in ensuring that the area surrounding an airport is especially well designed and maintained. News affecting this can include the physical expansion of an airport, labor union concerns, or damage done by extreme weather. The traffic patterns into and exiting from an airport will receive careful consideration.

Taxpayer rarely realize that they have a stake in their local airport too. Whether the average person knows it or not, a significant portion of their city budget can result from, and go back into the travel center. The costs of city planners, road crews, and traffic light operation all falls on the taxpayers. Let us not forget that taxpayers also reap the benefits of a well run airport. This can have a big effect on the budget.

Airport news does involve the broader community. The revenue and costs of a travel center sends ripple effect throughout the surrounding area. Maybe if people pay closer attention and do their part to ensure the safe and pleasant travel for others communities could profit even further.
